Optimise your website - Why Top 3 is a 'Must'
A recent 'Eye-tracking' study has verified the importance of websites being positioned in the top 3 internet search results. The study has shown the majority of searcher eye activity takes place in the 'golden-triangle' at the top of the search results.

The key red area was looked at by 100 percent of the participants referred to as the "Golden Triangle". The darker blues represent the least ‘looked at’ area of the page.
The number of searchers looking at search results below position #5 decreases significantly as you go down the page. This re-enforces the importance and value of not only being on Page 1, but being above the fold and preferably in the top 3 search results.

100% of users looked at those websites ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Google results. This then fell from 85% of users looking at the 4th result down to just 20% looking at the 10th result.
In addition, where Sponsored Links (i.e. Google AdWords) are shown above the organic search results, these ads are being seen by 80-100% of searchers, as opposed to just 10-50% of searchers who look at the side sponsored ads. Keep in mind however, that Google AdWords doesn't cost anything until someone clicks on an ad.
What Does This Mean For Your Business?
Obtaining top 3 organic search rankings can be done by following a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) process, and closely adhering to the requirements of the major search engines. The following 5 factors will considerably effect where your website ranks:
- Content - ensure your website has lots of high quality, unique content that is relevant for your business/industry which contains potential search phrases used by your target market.
- Inbound Links - a link from a website to your website is like a vote in your favor. The more popular these other websites are, the greater the weighting of these inbound links/votes.
- Age - the search engines factor in the age of a website/domain, giving greater preference to those that are older and are more trusted. If you are considering starting a new website, we suggest doing this sooner rather than later, even if it is a small website to start with. This will help kick-start the ageing process.
- Time/Reaction - if visitors spend more time at your website, the search engines have an indication of a positive reaction towards your website. Adding plenty of content and particularly video is one of the easiest ways to keep visitors at your website longer.
- Domain Name - a keyword rich domain name (e.g. taxaccountantperth.com.au) will tend to rank higher than a meaningless domain (e.g. smithandsmith.com.au).
