Networking Know How - Marketing on a shoestring

It's a tried and tested forum and it works for many businesses.  Networking remains, for many, one of the cheapest (in terms of financial investment) and effective forms of marketing available to businesses today.
Targeted Networking - With the advent of social media there are a plethora of associated networking forums available for all types of business to attend, the key is identify those which will benefit your business.  Assess the attendees and establish you have a common target market with them, which could lead to qualified referrals.  Beware of those events with end up as coffee clubs - with no structure or agenda.
Walk the Talk - Stand out from the crowd and be aware that you will be judged on first impressions.  Having a well designed and produced business card for example shows you have invested time and money on your brand, the inference being you also invest in your clients.  Then ask yourself why the cosmetic salesperson is wearing no make-up, or the wealth creation person has photocopied business cards.  First impressions last.

Less is more - Don't waste your time and money on handing out sophisticated corporate profiles or product flyers in these forums.  A well designed business card will cut through and many people attending these functions will have the means to file your business for future reference, but they don't have the space to store piles of marketing material.  Save those for your more targeted and qualified marketing leads.

Find your niche - If you are working the room effectively you may only have a couple of minutes to sell your business, so be sure you are focused in your message.  For example, if you are a personal stylist be specific on the services you offer, e.g. 'styling for mothers returning to work after having a baby', 'people with a new hair colour' or 'need help dressing for a special event'.  Such direct and short insights are much more powerful than a broad statement people can't identify with.

   Happy Networking!

Steps to successful Social Media Marketing

Here it is again, and I'm afraid it's just not going to go away - Social media is here to stay and is slowly but surely transitioning from Gen Y to the wider markets.  It remains the fastest growing marketing platform and businesses really need to start embracing it our be left in its wake.  I know it's a daunting prospect, especially for the more 'mature and established' business, but here are some practical tips on what your business can do to join the revolution:

1. Commit
- Social media is not a quick fix, its effects are built slowly over time.  It therefore needs committment from decision makers and stakeholders for the long haul.  This maybe in the form of freeing up an internal resource or employing an external consultant to manage and update the various forums on a daily or weekly basis.
2. Connect - Find targeted connections, be it existing or potential clients or networking contacts.  There are hundreds of sites available for you to connect through, here are the most relevant for businesses; LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.  If you want to establish which forum is relevant for your targeted connections, click here for more information on the key demographical information for each of the above forums.
3 Care - Take care in selecting the administrator for your business' social media forums.  It needs to be someone with the right skills and attitude to understand the clients mindset and who are customer centric, thus making the interaction engaging and relevant for the recipient, which will stimulate return visits to your forum.

4. Communicate
- Communicate specifically and intelligently with people you want to be involved with and help. The forums offer various methods of communicating; blogs, organised events, creating a group or using Slideshare to tell a story.
  • Spend time on replying to Tweets and posts and aim to establish dialog, not monologue.
  • Inject fun activities such as contests and open discussions.
  • Use content to drive customers to your website.
5. Control - Use Google Analytics, TwitterGrader and FacebookGrader to monitor and measure the activity on the various forums to establish which is providing the best ROI for your business.
